Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 8

Lucky scrambled to an 8-6 record last week which coupled with week six’s blockbuster performance has me feeling optimistic about week Eight. Let’s get to the picks:Redskin’s +2 @ Giants
Giants lackluster defense will be unable to slow down the emerging triplets for the “Skins”. Brunell, Moss, and Portis should all put up big numbers against the leaky Giant’s defense. On the other side, Washington has one of the finest defenses in the league.
Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Packers @ Bengals -10
Even Favre cannot continue to keep the Packers competitive. The latest injuries, Ahman Green and Robert Ferguson, leave the Packers thin at the skill positions. Bengals will rebound at home after their huge loss to the Steelers. Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Bears +3 @ Lions
Lion QB Jeff Garcia has Lions more dangerous on offence but Bears counter with vastly superior defense and rushing attack. Take the Bears and the points. Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Vikings +8.5 @ Panthers
Vikings really pulled it together in the 2nd half against the Packers. I expect their “bunker mentality” will keep it close in Carolina.
Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Raiders -1.5 @ Titans
Home dogs Titans with McNair returning at QB are not talented enough to hang with the Raiders. The well coached Titans are struggling to put healthy players on field. Raiders RB Lamont Jordan is running with confidence. Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Cardinals +10 @ Cowboys
The Cowboys have played nail biters in six of seven games. Expect that trend to continue against the youthful Cardinals. Cowboys makeshift OL will struggle against Cardinal pass rush.
Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Browns +2 @ Texans
It is hard to fathom winless Texans favored in this contest. The Texans have shown a total inability to protect QB David Carr. Expect the Browns to pound the ball against Texans porous run defense.
Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Dolphins @ Saints-3
Expect emotional contest as Miami coach Saban returns to LSU. Saints playing in storm ravaged Louisiana have better tools on offense and just enough grit on Defense for a convincing win.
Game Date: 10/30/05 16:05 ET

Chiefs +6.5 @ Chargers
Charger RB Tomlinson was shut down by Eagles. Expect the Chiefs to copy those tactics to try and contain him. Kansas City will control the clock with RB tandem of Holmes and Johnson.
Game Date: 10/30/05 16:05 ET

Buccaneers -12 @ 49ers
Expect San Franciscos offensive woes to continue with QB Dorsey up against top rated Tampa Bay Defense. Buc star rookie RB Cadillac Williams could see first action since week four.
Game Date: 10/30/05 16:15 ET

Eagles +3.5 @ Broncos
Eagles swarming defense should throttle Denver RBs. Eagle offense has sputtered but should get back on track at Mile High. Expect Eagles to run the bar to keep McNabb, 58 passes last week, fresh.
Game Date: 10/30/05 16:15 ET

Jaguars -3 @ Rams
Ram offensive injuries especially at QB and WR will hamper production. Jaguar RB Fred Taylor returns to exploit Rams beleaguered defense. Jaguars should be healthy after their bye.
Game Date: 10/30/05 13:00 ET

Bills +10 @ Patriots
Ten points is too much to lay for a Patriot team that has struggled to run effectively and conversely has been ineffectual against the run. McGahee should rebound from last weeks, 37 yards, performance.
Game Date: 10/30/05 20:35 ET

Ravens @ Steelers -11
The Steelers are separating themselves from the pack with dominant offense and defense. The Ravens cannot run, Jamal Lewis is averaging 2.9 yards per carry. God knows they sure can not throw it! Fine Raven defense is hurting mightily with both Ray Lewis and Ed Reed out. Game Date: 10/31/05 21:05 ET

Big Bet Of The Week
Take the Cardinals +330 to upset the Cowboys. This Cowboy team finds ways to keep things close. I will always take 3-1 in close games.

Bonus Big Bet
Take the Bills +325 to upset the Patriots. The Bills strengths, pass defense and rushing attack, match up well against this years Patriot squad.

Sorry for all the delays this week. Lucky is in New Zealand and we had difficulty transcribing his picks. Here they are fresh from down under. The penetrating analysis will be my own, 80 year old Uncle John.New Orleans Saints @ St Louis Rams -3.5
Both teams rediscovered their ground games last week. Rams are scarier through the air. Take St. Louis modestly priced at home.
Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

Green Bay Packers -1.5 @ Minnesota Vikings
The Packers have some pride. Ahman Green returns for the run challenged Pack Attack. Daunte and Tice must wait another week to wake up from their nightmare. Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

Indianapolis Colts -16.5 @ Houston Texans
Expect Mr. Carr to get sacked a dozen times at least. Colts will flood the field with reserves. Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals -1
Steelers are no longer the best team in this division. Meet the Bengals! Cincinnati should be favored more at home.
Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

San Diego Chargers @ Philadelphia Eagles -3.5
Even Lucky has the occasional horrible day. Philly has been stewing for two weeks about “The Humiliation in Dallas”. Look for them to kick ass at home. Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

Detroit Lions @ Cleveland Browns -3
Dilfer is surprising everybody with his stellar leadership. Browns undervalued at home. Give the three.
Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

San Francisco 49ers @ Washington Redskins -13.5
This week the Niners traded Tim Rattay who was their one chance to win again this year. Brunell gets my vote as Comeback Player of the Year. Game Date: 10/23/05 13:00 ET

Dallas Cowboys +5 @ Seattle Seahawks
Danger, Danger! People are talking up the Seahawks again. That is never a good sign. This game feels like pick em so grab the generous five you get with the Cowboys. Game Date: 10/23/05 16:05 ET

Buffalo Bills +3 @ Oakland Raiders
Randy Moss will sit this one out. Bills have found a passer, Kelly Holcomb, who can deliver the ball deep to a speedy batch of receivers. Game Date: 10/23/05 16:15 ET

Baltimore Ravens +1 @ Chicago Bears
Bears are the worst first place team in Football. EVER! Take the underachieving Ravens and the point.
Game Date: 10/23/05 16:15 ET

Tennessee Titans @ Arizona Cardinals -5
Titans finally must sit down their great warrior, Steve McNair. Cardinals deliver this week on untapped potential.
Game Date: 10/23/05 16:15 ET

Denver Broncos +2 @ New York Giants
Broncos are the superior squad across the board. Giant defense is ranked thirty-first. My own shriveled wife is ranked higher in a room with twenty other women. Grab the points!
Game Date: 10/23/05 16:15 ET

New York Jets @ Atlanta Falcons -7.5
Curtis Martin is a baller, kudos for tough Vinnie as well. However, Atlanta is too tough for the banged up Jets.
Game Date: 10/24/05 21:10 ET

Big Bet Of The Week

It pains me to pick the Cowboys +160 to win out right against my beloved Seahawks. The ten gallon jug of Black Rum, I intend to buy with the proceeds will ease the pain!

Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 6

Last week was another push for Lucky Lester. I picked some great victories, but couldn’t find a happy place with those tweener games. This week I went all the way to the boondocks of Montucky for my week Six insight. That’s right, my famous professional card playing Aunt P and Uncle Bruceage have been obliterating the books in their pick’em league, and taking home the cash pot with sweet grins. We disagree on some games in week 6, but you can’t argue with success. Follow along as I do my damnedest to make sense of Auntie P’s Picks.New York Giants (+3.5) @ Dallas Cowboys – I couldn’t agree more. The Cowboys are getting way too much credit for the Eagles tumble off the sanity tree. Don’t be confused, the Cowboys aren’t that good. Eli Manning has had two weeks to prepare for Bill Parcells’ average defensive unit, and he’ll make the best of it. Jeremy Shockey loves to bring it to the Cowboys, and especially to Bill Parcells. Tiki Barber will have one of his better weeks against a secondary that should be scared of Shockey and Plaxico Burress. The Giant defense will do just enough to upset Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys in a big divisional game.
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Carolina Panthers (+1) @ Detroit Lions -Neither Aunt P or I can imagine how the oddsmakers came up with this joke of a spread. Those Lions haven’t sucked since the Chicago Bear game in Week 2. We both agree; they’re due! Look for the Panthers to take a week off from their bad habit of playing to the level of their opponents and kick the Lions right under the tail. Don’t expect much from Joey Harrington without Roy Williams in the lineup. Do, however, expect the Panthers to shut down Kevin Jones, using 8 and 9 players in the box. Jake Delhomme will find Steve Smith again and again on route to a big point differential. Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Atlanta Falcons (-5) @ New Orleans Saints – Can the Saints rebound against a good Falcon team who almost took down the defending champs without Mike Vick to lead them? P says, “No chance in Hellgate!” and I couldn’t say it better myself. Mike Vick might be back for this game, but even if he doesn’t make it, Matt Schaub will have his way with the bandaged up New Orleans squad. Watch Warrick Dunn run wild in San Antonio.
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Minnesota Vikings (+3) @ Chicago Bears – I think Penny Auntie took a shot in the dark with this one, though she says this pick is as good as gold. She hates the Vikings and Culpepper more than anything, yet still can’t imagine the Vikings losing to the Kyle Orton led Bears. P thinks Daunte will play better, and Mewelde Moore will out perform 1st Round Pick Cedric Benson as he starts with Thomas Jones on the mend. I think she might be on to something, and you can’t really argue with Aunt P anyway; she slaps harder than Rick James. Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Jacksonville Jaguars (+6) @ Pittsburgh Steelers – The Jaguars in Pittsburgh? “The Steelers are ready to lose,” says Aunt P. I think the Jaguars are one of the best teams in this league, but so are the Steelers. The Jaguars always play tight with good teams, so the spread is on my side… I like that. With Big Ben unsure if he’s going to play or watch, Byron Leftwich might be ready to take advantage of this chance to prove he’s one of the league’s best young guns. Fred Taylor needs to find room for this upset to take place. Take the Jaguars and the points in Pittsburgh.
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Washington Redskins @ Kansas City Chiefs (-5.5) – The Redskins were three points away from going 4-0, but they couldn’t convert the two-pointer. Mark Brunell threw for 322 yards. He won’t approach those numbers in Kansas City. Look for the Redskins to take a step back toward reality this week as they get tortured by a tough Kansas City team that looks hungry for a win after their bye. The Chiefs have to win this game if they want to be taken seriously. Tony Gonzalez will have his best game of the year against the tough Redskin D, putting rumors that he’s washed up to rest. Priest Holmes is ready to explode, so watch the Chiefs dominate.
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Cincinnati Bengals (-3) @ Tennessee Titans – The Bengals are P’s pick in this one. I’m with her. How can the Titan defense stop Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, and Rudi Johnson? Let me take a page out of Chad Johnson’s book… they can’t. They can’t guard him. My hope is that Adam Jones has to guard Chad. You’ll see Jones’ mouth moving before the play, then Johnson will catch a touchdown pass, then Adams mouth will take a nice little rest with his ass on the bench. Take the Bengals in a blowout. Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Cleveland Browns @ Baltimore Ravens (-5.5) – I have to be honest I kind of like the Browns in this one. I’ve lost all hope in the Ravens, but as Penelope says, “Lester, you give up on teams too early.” She’s got a point. All she says is, “The Browns suck,” but maybe she sees the same Ravens I’ve been trying to see since the season started. Maybe she sees Jamal Lewis finally starting to play like the 2000 yard back from two years ago. Maybe she sees a Cleveland Brown team who game up 295 rushing yards to Lewis in one game. She probably sees a defensive unit with Ray Lewis, Chris McCallister, Ed Reed, Deion, and a plethora of great supporting players like Suggs and Kelly Gregg. And she’s right, if that team comes to play on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns don’t stand a chance. I’ll take that bet!
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

Miami Dolphins @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-4.5) – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took one on the chin when Vinny Testeverde walked onto the field and gave them their first defeat of the season. Well they’re going to be back in full force against Miami. Do you think Cadillac Williams wants to show up his former teammate at Auburn, Ronnie Brown? Brown was picked ahead of Williams, but it was Williams who burst onto the scenes the first three games. The last two weeks it’s Brown who has been running the ball well. Who will it be? Brown or Williams? I think Gruden does a great job of finding places for Carnell to succeed. He’ll continue that when Williams returns to the field this weekend. This game also marks the return of Ricky Williams. The Buc’s should shut the Miami offense down. Look for Gus Frerotte to have a tough go as Tampa Bay controls this game from the get.
Game Date: 10/16/05 13:00 ET

New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos (-3) – Let me say this, I hate the Broncos. I don’t see them winning this game. I don’t see them making the playoffs. Now let me say this. They are 4-1. They get Champ Bailey back in full health this week. Since their loss to Miami, they haven’t lost another game. Jake Plummer has played like chicken feed all season and they’re still on top of the league. Maybe I’m wrong! P thinks the same old same old will continue this week. “The Broncos will be 5-1.” Is it possible for the Broncos to have more wins than their quarterback has touchdowns? The Patriots pulled out a big one in Atlanta… but maybe they’re too banged up to play that way every week. Tom Brady will have a big game, but we’re taking the Broncos to shut down the Patriot rushing attack and cause turnovers often. Those Broncos are always tough at home.
Game Date: 10/16/05 16:15 ET

San Diego Chargers (-2) @ Oakland Raiders – The Raiders are better than their record, but not as good as the Chargers. Ladainian Tomlinson will be the first running back that handles the Raider defensive front. He’s too explosive for those old farts. Aunt P says the Raiders have a running shot it this one, but she has to go with the Chargers to rebound from their Monday Night defeat. I’m with her. Randy Moss will explode as will Jerry Porter. But it will be the Chargers who find themselves on top by games end. Kerry Collins will help the cause with a couple turnovers late in the second half.
Game Date: 10/16/05 16:15 ET

New York Jets @ Buffalo Bills (-3) – The Jets can win games with Vinny at quarterback. But they won’t beat the Bills because Kelly Holcomb will make enough plays with his arm to take the game in Buffalo. This is a game between two of the leagues premier defenses. So expect a shootout! That’s right. Take the tiny over in this game and surprise the world. The Bills will score two late touchdowns to blow open the game. Willis McGahee will have a nice game against a stout Jets team, but the Bills will get their third win of the year.
Game Date: 10/16/05 16:15 ET

Houston Texans @ Seattle Seahawks (-9.5) – “The Texans? I don’t care how many points they are getting! The USC Trojans would beat the Texans!” Note to self: Aunt P can be a little violent from time to time when you ask her to think about all the points the Seahawks are giving up. Stick with the hot hand I guess. The Seahawks finally took down their arch rival St. Louis Rams last weekend, ending a season long drought that took them out of the playoffs last year. P says they’ll be fired up to continue their winning ways at home against the top-pick bound Houston Texans. “They should stop rooting for the Texans, and start rooting more Reggie Bush!” I think they should start rooting for linemen. Either way, we’re taking the Hawks in a Seattle blowout. Game Date: 10/16/05 20:30 ET

St. Louis Rams (-13.5) @ Indianapolis Colts – The Rams are pathetic, but the Colts haven’t really beat the snot out of any team this year. I don’t count the Alex Smith led 49ers. In fact, besides the Jaguars, the Colts haven’t played a good team yet. And counting the Jags, they haven’t played an explosive offensive team yet. The Rams can be explosive. Expect Steven Jackson to eclipse the 25 carries mark, with Mike Martz off the sidelines. If the Rams can do that, they have a chance to deal the Colts their first defeat. Aunt P boasts, “The Colts are ready to lose!” I don’t know if they’re as ready as she thinks, but the question may be, is their defense ready to defend the greatest show on turf? The Rams will be ready, will the Colts?
Game Date: 10/17/05 21:00 ET
Big Bet Of The Week
Take the Giants to win outright in Dallas for a nifty +150 payout. Giants are rested and ready to put down an erratic Cowboy team.

Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 5

Home Alone! Is it possible that the away teams will win 12 of 14 games this week? I sure hope so. I’ve taken the underdog in eight games and the away team in twelve. These are both season highs for me, so get ready for a season high in the win column. After another week of mediocrity (7-7) I’m primed for a big breakout performance that will bring me up and over the .500 plateau. An epic home team disaster is on the way. Don’t drink and drive!

Chicago @ Cleveland (-3) – The Bears and Browns were both off in Week 4. Many are saying the bye week will help Kyle Orton get used to the NFL, but I’m here to say that won’t happen. All a bye week does for a rookie is allow him to think more about his mistakes. Kyle will do much better when he gets into the swing of things and doesn’t have enough time to think about anything, just play football. Trent Dilfer has been very accurate for the Browns, and he’ll need to continue that if he wants to win his first home game in a Browns uniform. The Browns will find it tough to dent the Bears powerful defensive unit, but big mistakes by the Bears will allow Cleveland to pull it off late. Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

New Orleans (+3) @ Green Bay – The Packers shouldn’t be favored against anybody. The Packers can’t do just enough to beat me this week, as they can’t make me lose without winning the game. God knows they’re not prepared to do that. My good friend lives in Green Bay, and he told me “I’ve never see more grown men cry than when the Packers got beat by the Browns in Lambeau.” Tears should continue to poor like the Fox River as Joe Horn will come back from injury and terrorize Al Harris and the Packer secondary. Look for Aaron Brooks to have his biggest statistical game of the year as the Saints upset the Pack. Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Tampa Bay (-3) @ New York Jets – The Buccaneers got lucky against Detroit last week. Marcus Pollard’s knee supposedly went out of bounds before he controlled the ball and Mike Williams’ right pinky toe nicked the left sideline in the end zone as the Buc’s literally won by an inch. But you take them when you can get them, and everyone and their mother knows, this is the time to take them from the Jets. Cadillac Williams is bruised and possibly out for this game, but back up runner Michael Pittman is no slouch. The Jets will have their hands full, with or without Carnell in the lineup. Look for Joey Galloway to make more big-plays as Tampa Bay takes out the Jets in New York.
Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Seattle (+3) @ St. Louis – The Seahawks never win in St. Louis. Hell, the Hawks never beat the Rams no matter where the game is played. Little known fact, the Rams are always out to surprise their viewers. Last week they got destroyed by the New York Giants, but the Rams always play well at home. Ha! That’s what they want you to think. Don’t let them fool you. They will lose to Seattle this week. There’s no question in my mind. Shaun Alexander will rush for over 100 yards without much of a defense to get in his way. When Shaun does that, the Seahawks win big. Take the Hawks to win their first game against the Rams in over a year. Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

New England @ Atlanta (-3) – Wait until right before kickoff to take this bet. If Mike Vick isn’t suiting up for the Falcons, the Patriots at +3 is a pretty damn good bet. If Vick is starting, take the Falcons in a landslide. The Falcons defense has really stepped it up, and the Patriots aren’t as sharp as they once were. But that’s not where this game is going to be won and lost. The Falcons possess the leagues best rushing attack by far. Even without Vick, the Falcons have a shot because the Patriots haven’t been able to stop the run all year. They won’t be able to hold the three headed monster in Atlanta (Vick, Dunn, and Duckett) When the Patriots lose this game, they will be 2-3. I won’t say I told you so! Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Miami (+3) @ Buffalo – The Dolphins are a better football team than I expected. On the eve before the return of Ricky Williams, the Dolphins will go into Buffalo and beat a wounded Bills squad. Wounded by the loss of Takeo Spikes, and wounded like the Ducks that JP Losman throws every other play. Nick Saban has done wonders for this Dolphin team, and he’ll continue to wow us as he takes the Dolphins to 3-1. Right now the Dolphins are leading the AFC. Can they keep it up? They can in Week 5! Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Baltimore (+1.5) @ Detroit – The Lions played well enough to win last week against the undefeated Buccaneers, but luck wasn’t on their side as they fell inches short of victory, not once but twice. Joey Harrington played well against a very good Tampa Bay defense. Can he replicate or one up his performance in week 5? I’m guessing NO. The Ravens defense finally showed up to play as they limited the Jets to three whole points. Baltimore’s offense isn’t worthy of much more than a victory in Detroit, but that’s exactly where they play this week. Take the Ravens to outlast the Lions for their second win in a row. Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Tennessee (+3) @ Houston – The Titans were humiliated by the Colts. They’ll get used to that sooner than later. Lucky for them they play the winless Houston Texans in Week 5. Look for Steve McNair to get some time to throw, feeding the ball to Drew Bennett for Drew’s first 100 yard game of the year. Chris Brown will also get a chance to shine against an average Texan defense. This will be a tight game, as the Texans proved last week that they aren’t a complete waste of an NFL Franchise. The Titan defense will force David Carr in to his customary mistakes, leaving room for McNair to put early points on the board. Take the Titans by a couple in this minor upset.
Game Date: 10/09/05 13:00 ET

Indianapolis (-14.5) @ San Francisco – The Colts weren’t bashful when showing the Titans that their offense is still quite powerful. Don’t expect them to take it easy on the banged up 49er defense that gave up nearly 400 yards to Joshy Woshy McCowen in Mexico on Sunday Night. Petyon Manning… Josh McCowen… Hmmmm… I’m sure the 49ers are excited to throw their crazy blitz packages at Peyton. The Colts might take the over by themselves. I wonder if the Niners will wait until next year to let Alex Smith meat Dwight Freeney? The Colts might very well match the Falcons nine sacks against Minnesota. Either way, there will be plenty of room for both Peyton’s offense and Dwight Freeney’s defense to showcase their talents as the Colts will upend the Niners in epic proportions.
Game Date: 10/09/05 16:05 ET

Carolina (-2.5) @ Arizona – The Panther’s almost let a very important victory slip away to the Second-Half-Packers on Monday night. Luckily for them they pulled it out by the gray hairs on Brett’s chinny, chin, chin. That should have been a wake up call to John Fox and his club. Whether the Panthers like it or not, they need to get the ball to Deshaun Foster more. Steven Davis gets tough yards, but there were too many instances when Davis was just a touch to slow to get the big gain. Look for Jake Delhomme to do what the Niners couldn’t and exploit Arizona’s young secondary.
Game Date: 10/09/05 16:15 ET

Philadelphia (-3.5) @ Dallas – The Eagles are much better than the tumbling Cowboys. Dallas hasn’t done jack after beating the Chargers in week 2. That’s right, I barely count that win over the 49ers. This week Terrell Owens will make the Dallas Cowboy secondary look like a flock of JP Losman’s wounded ducks. Donovan McNabb should have another huge night against a Dallas defense that has a hard time stopping their scout team. Brian Westbrook will find room to run when the Cowboys drop their linebackers to defend McNabb. Julius Jones might have himself a good first half, but being down by two touchdowns at half never helps a running back’s numbers. This game won’t be close. Take the Eagles in an easy one.
Game Date: 10/09/05 16:15 ET

Washington (+7.5) @ Denver – The Redskins played well at home against the Hawks last week. This week they go into Denver to play the Lucky-screwing Broncos. I have to be honest, Denver is overachieving. Mark Brunell was efficient last week against Seattle. He’ll continue in Denver. This week the Redskins will make Jake Plummer beat them, and that won’t happen. Shawn Springs and the Redskin rookie, Rogers, are both solid on the corner. With old-man Rod Smith and drop-it-often Ashley Lelie at wide receiver, the Broncos will be sledding uphill in Mile High. Take the Redskins and all those points in Denver. Game Date: 10/09/05 16:15 ET

Cincinnati (+2.5) @ Jacksonville – The Bengals are a good team that is riding the wave of confidence coming out of Cincinnati. The Jaguars were humiliated by the Broncos in Jacksonville last week. This is a hard one for me, because I love what Byron Leftwich brings to the quarterback position. But his team’s inability to run the ball will catch up to them again when the tough Bengal defense comes to Jacksonville. Look for Carson Palmer to have a big day through the air with Donovan Darius out of the Jaguar lineup. This will be a tight one, but the Bengals will pull out a minor upset in Jacksonville.
Game Date: 10/09/05 20:35 ET

Pittsburgh (+3) @ San Diego – I’m taking the away team in this Monday Night Showdown. The Steelers had two weeks to prepare for the best running back the NFL has to offer. They won’t shut Ladainian Tomlinson down, but they’ll make him work harder than the Patriots did a week ago. Don’t be surprised if LT goes Week 5 without a touchdown. The Steelers are very tough on Defense, and they’ll be out to prove something after a big loss at home to New England in Week 3. Big Ben Roethlisberger will have a better day in San Diego, tossing touchdowns to Hines Ward while pulling off a minor upset against the streaking Chargers. Game Date: 10/10/05 21:05 ET

A NUMBERS BET
Seattle (+3) @ St. Louis – The Rams have lost to the spread in 8 of the last 11 games they’ve been favored. Seattle has lost their last three games against the Rams. Who will win out? Take the Hawks. They’ve proved to be a more balanced team this year, and they’ll out-dual the Rams in St. Louis.

Big Bet of the Week
Washington (To Win) (+280) @ Denver – The Broncos are overachieving as are the Redskins. The Redskins have a decent rushing attack and a decent passing attack. The Broncos have a decent rushing attack and Jake Plummer at quarterback. That’s the difference. The Broncos won’t be able to throw all their marbles into stopping the run like the Redskins will. Denver will fall from their 3-1 pedestal. Take the big money!

Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 3

Atlanta @ Buffalo (-3) – The Falcons might have to play against the feared Buffalo Bill defense without Mike Vick. If that becomes true, take this bet in a hurry. The Bills make veteran quarterbacks look like rookies, Matt Schaub will have one hell of a time if he starts. The Bills are coming off a big loss to a tough Buccaneer squad, where JP Losman looked like the first year starting quarterback that he is. You can bet the Falcons and Patrick Kerney will be hot on his trail this Sunday. The Falcons gave up 144 yards to Shaun Alexander last week. Willis McGahee will get enough carries to match Shaun’s big numbers. Even if Vick plays, I’m taking the Bills to push Atlanta to 1-2. McGahee is too good to keep under 100 yards, and the Takeo Spikes and his band of outlaws will shut down the Falcon rushing attack. Look for Losman to be limited under 20 pass attempts. If the Bills can do that, they win hands down!
Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ETJacksonville (+2.5) @ New York Jets – The Jets got a much needed win against the Miami Dolphins last Sunday. Chad Pennington completed 19-30, and the Jets defense played strong, limiting the Dolphins to one late score. Jacksonville lost a hard fought battle to the Colts, but played well enough to make me a believer. (I promptly went and dropped some cash on a futures Super Bowl bet) Byron Leftwich is a winner, and he’ll play with a sprained knee this Sunday. Look for Fred Taylor and the Jacksonville offensive line to pull a Chief-one on the Jet defense, rushing for big yards and a couple touchdowns. Leftwich will have decent numbers, but he won’t need to have a big day to win. The Jaguar defense is one of the most underrated units in the league, but that only makes them better. If Curtis Martin doesn’t start (he’s questionable) the Jaguars will have an easy time halting Pennington and the Jets. Take the Jaguars to upset on the road. Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Tennessee (+6.5) @ St. Louis – The Rams lost to the 49ers in week one and beat the Arizona Cardinals in week 2. I lost both of those games. With the Titans coming to town, I have to bet against those pesky Rams. Since last season the Rams are 3-7 against the spread when favored. Can you say 3-8? Steve McNair won’t have much resistance when he drops back to pass. If Tim Rattay can do it, so can Steve! Chris Brown and Travis Henry will continue to control the clock for the Titans, who have played smart football in both games this early season. Steve Fisher knows how to coach, which gives the Titans a 1-0 lead before the game even starts. If Martz bites his own stupid play calling mic and gives the ball to Steven Jackson 25 times, the Rams have a chance, but don’t be surprised if Martz decides deep bombs are better than a sure 5 yards per carry. In fact, bet on it. I am. The Rams will struggle early and often, make big mistakes, and do their best to lose at home to a “rebuilding” team. The Titans will play smart and capitalize on the Rams ineptitude’s. Look for a big upset in St. Louis. Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Oakland @ Philadelphia (-7.5) – The Raiders have played well for a team without a win. Their defense played tough against the Patriots in week one, but couldn’t stop Brady because the Raider offense didn’t help at all. They played tough against Kansas City, holding the Chief offense well under their rushing average, and Kerry Collins even looked all right against the revamped Chief D, but they couldn’t take the Chiefs in Oakland. Randy Moss and TO make this the best wide receiver match-up in football, and both will make their mark on this game. The Eagles are always very tough at home, and you can bet they’ll want to build on what they did last week against San Francisco. Donovan McNabb will have another big game, and TO will out perform Randy Moss in a high scoring affair. Look for Greg Lewis and LJ Smith to get a touchdown a piece with TO taking most of the Raider attention. Brian Westbrook might not get big rushing totals, but he’ll be a force receiving with the Raiders’ average linebacking corps in coverage. Kerry Collins has yet to throw an interception, which is a miracle if you’ve seen any of his games. He won’t be able to loft it up in Philly as Lito Sheppard, Brian Dawkins, Michael Lewis, and Sheldon Brown are ball hawks. Week 3 should get Collins back on his one interception for every touchdown pace.
Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Cincinnati (-3) @ Chicago – Chicago has played very well this year. The Bear defense has been as good as any, holding the Redskins without a touchdown in week 1, and the Lions to 6 points in week 2. Kyle Orton looks like a future star in this game, with the future coming soon. Unfortunately for the Bears, Carson Palmer’s red hot arm, and his beastly Bengals come to town as hot as any team in the league. Two wins and over 600 yards for Palmer after two games, has the sports world praising his name. Not bad for a third year quarterback. Chad Johnson is truly special, as loud and obnoxious as his mouth may be. Rudi Johnson will find little room to run in Chicago, but he’ll be pounding between them tackles. The Bears can’t focus on one thing like they did against the Redskins and the Lions. If they set out to stop the run, bringing safeties up in support, Carson Palmer will lace into their secondary. If they drop back in coverage too often, Rudi Johnson will bulldoze through the line of scrimmage to victory. The Bears are better than many thought, and that includes me, but they aren’t as good as the Bengals, a team that looks like a surefire playoff squad. Look for a defensive struggle early, with Palmer finding Johnson for a couple big plays that bury the Bears.
Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

New Orleans (+4) @ Minnesota – The Saints always play well when they’re underdogs. Last week, they were put in a tough place, traveling to the Giants home field for a home game. They played much better than the 17 point margin, but couldn’t get past their numerous penalties and freak turnovers. In their last 10 games, they are 6-4 against the spread when favored. Team that fact with the way the Minnesota Vikings have played their first two games, and the Saints look like a pretty good bet to go into Minnesota and upset the Vikings. Daunte Culpepper will have a break out game, but the Minnesota defense will continue to play poorly. Luckily for the Vikings they are in the division with the Bears, Packers, and Lions. They can start off poorly and still win the division. Look for a shootout in this one, with Aaron Brooks and Daunte Culpepper tossing touchdowns left and right. I think more than 60 points will be scored with the Saints on top after 4. Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Carolina (-3) @ Miami – The Panthers by 3? C’mon, that’s the best the oddsmakers could do! Take the Carolina Panthers in a laugher. The Dolphins aren’t good enough to play with good teams, and Carolina is one of the best this league has to offer. Steven Davis will find the end zone once or twice against the 3-4 scheme in Miami, and Jake Delhomme will find Steve Smith enough to take the Dolphins by a couple touchdowns. Don’t get me wrong, the Fins have played better than I expected, but they aren’t on the same level as Carolina.
Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Cleveland (+14) @ Indianapolis – The Browns played very well against the Packers last week, and the score was much closer than the game was. The Colts were in a war at home against Jacksonville, but came out on top. I usually take the team I think will win, but this week I have to take Cleveland because of that huge two touchdown spread. The Browns played well against a very good team in Cincinnati, and beat the Packers at home, though that’s not as rare is it once was. Either way, the Browns have the coaching and talent to play close to good teams, closer than 14. Manning should have his best day, but the defense in Indy will be tested by the Browns, who aren’t afraid to take a couple chances. Look for the Indianapolis Colts to end the game on top, but not without a bulldog fight from the new and improved Brownies. Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Tampa Bay (-3.5) @ Green Bay – The Packers might set a record for the amount of games they’re going to be underdogs in Lambeau. In turn, I might set a record for games I pick against the Packers when they’re underdogs at home. This should be a fun year! The Packers haven’t shown that they can play with anyone in the NFL. They got kicked around by the Lions, who went into Chicago and got obliterated. Then they lost to the Browns. Trent Dilfer threw for over 300 yards in that game. Not to knock Trent, but he’s not your regular Peyton Manning. This week the 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town, and the outcome isn’t very promising for Brett and his wilting pack of players. Cadillac Williams is leading the league in rushing after two games, and Chucky Gruden seems to have his team glowing with confidence and know-how. Brian Griese should have his best week passing, and the perennial stout defense in Tampa will have its way with the old Brett Favre and the sieved that claims to be his offensive line. Game Date: 09/25/05 13:00 ET

Arizona @ Seattle (-6) – It’s tough to take the Hawks with a 6 point spread. One reason is, the Cardinals have the talent and fire power to light it up any time now. The other reason is, the Seahawks were 2-8 against the spread when favored in 2004. But those are old numbers, and the talent that roams on the Arizona roster hasn’t transferred its way onto the field of play. The Hawks look like a good team, at least in the first half, where the Cardinals have struggled both early games of the season. Matt Hasselbeck has looked as accurate as ever, and the Hawk receivers have at least toned down their dropped passes. Shaun Alexander broke out of his baby booties last week and trucked an Atlanta defender on 3rd and 1. For running like tenderfoot for most of his career, the run was most impressive. Look for the Seahawks to take advantage of Kurt Warner miscues, his fluttering passes, and lack of mobility. With no rushing attack to press the Hawks, the Cardinals talented receiving corps will struggle to find room against the corner trio of Marcus Trufant, Kelly Herndon, and Andre Dyson.
Game Date: 09/25/05 16:05 ET

New England @ Pittsburgh (-3) – The Patriots finally made my prediction come true last week, losing to the Panthers by 10 in Carolina. Tom Brady looked frustrated for most of the game, a distant cry from his cool and calm assassination of the Raider secondary in week 1. Corey Dillon has yet to rush for decent yardage, and the Patriot defense obviously misses their old linebackers. Could it be that Bill Belichick has to much to do with three of his former coaching staff scattered around the football world? I think so. Belichick’s entire team looked confused in Carolina. The Pittsburgh Steelers should provide much of the same. Remember, it was last year when the Steel Show ended the Patriots famed winning streak. This year the Steelers should torment Tom Brady and shut down Corey Dillon. The powerful rushing attack in Steeler country will have its way with a punchless Patriot unit, and continue to make Willie Parker a made man. The Steeler defense hasn’t played against the best of opponents, but they’re ready to bring ruckus at Tom. Big plays won’t be scarce, as this game promises to be a great one.
Game Date: 09/25/05 16:15 ET

Dallas (-6.5) @ San Francisco – The Cowboys lost a heart breaker on Monday night. That’s really a shame. It broke my heart too. When Santana Moss sprinted right past the Cowboys’ best defensive player Roy Williams, I felt a single tear roll down my cheek. This week the Cowboys are bound to kick the San Francisco 49ers all over the field. Unfortunately the Cowboy offensive line is good. They give the upside down turtle ample opportunity to throw the ball accurately down field. The 49ers sputtering offensive unit will struggle to score even one touchdown against a defense that will be out to prove themselves after a 4th quarter debacle at home. Jerry Jones will be able to leave at half time to go sit in his 12 person jacuzzi. I hear he wets his bed 3-4 times per week. Can anyone back that up? Julius Jones will be the big story in California, rushing for over 150 yards and a couple scores. Take the ‘Boys in an old fashion beat down.
Game Date: 09/25/05 16:05 ET

New York Giants @ San Diego (-5.5) – The Giants pulled a quick one on the rest of the league when they got the Saints to come to New York for a home game. Nice. This week, the Chargers, who just happen to be 0-2, have to come out and win. If they don’t, they’re 0-3, and in the AFC that means no playoffs. After one of the best years for the Chargers in a long time, San Diego isn’t ready to give up this early. The Chargers will come out on a mission. Eli Manning will be frustrated by a hyped up Charger defense. We must remember, this is only Eli’s second year. Drew Brees will have a nice game, and Ladainian Tomlinson will eclipse the 100 yard mark for the first time this year. Antonio Gates is good for a touchdown, and everyone knows LT is taking one in. The Giants will fold early and the San Diego Chargers will get their first win of the year.
Game Date: 09/25/05 20:30 ET

Kansas City (+3) @ Denver – The Denver Broncos tried as hard as they could to lose last week against the Chargers. Unfortunately for my dollar, they failed, and came out on top. Not this week Mike Shanahan. The Chiefs are the real deal, one of the best teams the NFL has to offer. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson look to eclipse the 200 yard mark in Denver. Trent Green will throw his first touchdown of the year to Tony Gonzalez, and Dante Hall will find himself on Sports Center by the end of the day. Kansas City’s defense is going to take advantage of Jake Plummer’s inability to throw the ball to anyone on his own team. Plummer broke all John Elway’s records last year and seems happy with that, because he’s not building on his high-scoring year. The Chiefs defense is no longer a handicap, but a stout group that makes big plays. Kansas City will go to 3-0 in Denver, as the Broncos tumble to 1-2. Game Date: 09/26/05 21:00 ET
BIG MONEY BET OF THE WEEK: Titans +240 @ Rams

If you want to take a shot on a big underdog this weekend, go with the Titans in St. Louis. The Rams are more Jeckyl and Hyde than any team in the league, and the Titans are just coming off a big win against the Ravens. The Rams can lose to any team any day, as they proved with their week one loss to the Niners. Steve McNair should have his best game of the young year, and the tandem of Chris Brown and Travis Henry might pack enough punch to level the Rams. Also, since last year, in the Rams have been favored in 10 games. They’ve lost 5. At +240, my 50$ bet will pay out 120$. I like those odds!

Good Luck with your NFL Football Betting!
Lucky Lester – Free Football Picks

Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 2

It’s a good thing I got out all of those early-season free football picks butterflies in week one, because I can’t have another week like that. When I say can’t, I mean if I lose the type of cash I lost last Sunday, my wife says she’ll sell my TV to her “friend” that lives on the first floor. God knows I don’t want Guilermo watching soccer on my TV while he’s “teaching my wife how to cook”. I need a win like Guilermo needs to get his ass kicked. Anyway, that’s another article. What I need to do is switch the script on opening weekend and finish closer to 12 wins than 6… though both would be an upgrade. A little pathetic, I know. Luckily for good old Lucky, the odds makers have given me another chance to make good on my picks. No more Culpepper-like weeks for Lucky Lester… Bring on the victories Guilermo!!!
Baltimore (-4) @ Tennessee – The Ravens have lost their starting quarterback, Kyle Boller, to a knee injury. That’s the only reason I’m taking the Ravens. Boller wasn’t going to get the job done. With Kyle and his shot-put throwing style on the sidelines, the Ravens will light it up against a Tennessee defense that looked more like a J.V. team last week against the Steel show. This game should be a blow out. Jamal Lewis should get his season on track after a dismal start against the Colts. Baltimore will not go 0-2 to start the season, I guarantee that. The Steelers took care of their business in week one against the Tennessee Titans, and the Baltimore Ravens will do the same in week 2. Steve McNair and his makeshift offense won’t be able to produce against another tough defense. Anthony Wright knows how to get his receiving weapons, (Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, and Mark Clayton) the ball. If Wright plays well, and gives the Ravens a chance at the playoffs, don’t be surprised if Boller doesn’t see the starting lineup when he comes back. The Ravens need to win. They expect to win. If they don’t win, only God knows how Ray Lewis will react. Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Buffalo (+2.5) @ Tampa Bay – Last week the Buffalo Bills defense obliterated the Houston Texan offense. The Bills gave up 70 passing yards to David Carr while intercepting three of his passes. All preseason opposing players, like Brett Favre, praised the Buffalo defense, and for good reason. The Bills defense is as good as it gets. This week the Bills go up against the Buccaneers and rookie sensation Carnell Williams, who rushed for 148 yards last week against the “revamped” Viking defense. If you expect Williams to have a repeat performance, don’t hold your breath. This won’t be the same walk in the park for the Rookie. The Bills will hold Williams’ rushing total to under half his output from a week ago. This game might be the biggest defensive struggle so far this year. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are always good on defense, and they held MVP candidate Daunte Culpepper well below his season averages in almost every statistical category. Except for fumbles of course. Pep far exceeded those expectations with 5. He’s on pace to have one billion. Tampa Bay should fair better than the Vikings. They actually have a rushing attack. Brian Griese found his receivers last week against the Vikes, but they won’t be wide open this week. Griese will have a couple turnovers and the Bills will capitalize. Willis McGahee will eclipse 100 yards on the ground, even against a tough “stuff’em” defense in Tampa. This game will be an old fashion smash them in the mouth contest. Take the Bills, as they’re made for this type of game.
Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Detroit (-1.5) @ Chicago – Last week I claimed the Bears would take part in the most boring game of the week. Final score, Chicago Bears 7 – Washington Redskins 9. Last time the Cubs and the Nationals played there were more runs scored for God’s sake. This week the “exciting” Lions come to Chicago to do their best to brighten things up. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Lions will do exactly that. The Bears don’t have the firepower to play with any high-powered teams, so their only hope is to limit the Lions to fewer than two touchdowns. Good luck. Last week Kevin Jones didn’t find the end zone. This week will almost certainly be different. The Bears defense is tough, but their offense is so stagnant, and the Lions defense is much improved. What does that mean? Kyle Orton is a rookie. A good rookie, yes, but a rookie nonetheless. He’ll make his mistakes, giving the Lions good field position, and a chance to blow the game wide open. Roy Williams was held in check last week against a pathetic Packer defense. This week the average fan would think a much better Bear defense would have their way with Roy. Don’t expect that to happen. Roy will come to play this week. And if the Lions want to win, they’ll have to get their game-breaking receiver the ball. Look for this game to stay tight early, but watch the Lions break away as the Chicago Bear defense gets tired, ala the Colts against Baltimore last Sunday night.
Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Jacksonville (+9) @ Indianapolis – Speaking of those Indianapolis Colts, they host the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 2. The Jaguars’ defense won’t have the same effect they had on the Seattle Seahawks last week, limiting Shawn Alexander to 74 yards and intercepting Matt Hasselbeck twice. But they will play a big roll in Sunday’s tangle with the Colts. The Jacksonville Jaguars always play close, and they’re much improved from a year ago. Fred Taylor should play better in his second full game back from knee surgery, and Byron Leftwich will only get more and more comfortable as the season progresses. Don’t expect the Colts defense to play as well as they did last week against Baltimore. Because they were playing against Baltimore. They won’t get away with stacking the line of scrimmage against the run; Leftwich will pick them apart if they try that. Both secondarys will be tested this week. This will be a close game, early and late. The nine points given by the Colts is too much for my taste, so I’ll take the underdogs to play with in 9 points. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jags come out and put a wallop on the overconfident Colts. With Reggie Williams, Jimmy Smith, Fred Taylor, and Matt Jones on the field together, the Colts will have to make a decision. Will they blitz Byron and allow one of those aforementioned Jaguars to burn you? Or will you sit back and see if Byron will make mistakes? Don’t count the Jaguars out of this match-up.
Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Minnesota @ Cincinnati (-3) – The Vikings started the year just about as poorly as they possibly could. Well, I guess they could have lost to the Miami Dolphins or the San Francisco 49ers… Nice work Rams and Broncos! Either way, 5 turnovers and a huge loss to the Buccaneers at home couldn’t be what the Vikings were expecting after a good preseason. Daunte didn’t seem to gel with a wide receiving corps without Randy. Unfortunately for “Baby Hands” Culpepper, he’s going to have to learn to succeed without Mr. Moss. I imagine he’ll do much better this week against the Bengals. I don’t think he’ll win, but how could he possibly do worse than no touchdowns, three interceptions, and two fumbles? The Bengals didn’t destroy the Browns as I would have expected, but they won. Rudi Johnson rammed his way past the century mark, and Carson Palmer had his first big day, throwing for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns. There’s more to come from him. I think the Bengals are a better team than the Buc’s but the game will still be close throughout. Look for Rudi Johnson to follow Cadillac Williams’ lead and run all over the Minnesota Vikings on way to victory. Minnesota will play better this week, but still lose by a touchdown against a good Bengal team. Minnesota at 0-2… I have to say, I wouldn’t have expected that from the Vikings. Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

New England @ Carolina (+3) – The Patriots didn’t play all that well against the Raiders, but they still made their victory look easy. Tom Brady was in fine form, tossing rockets to open receivers all over the field. Corey Dillon started off slow, but finished with 2 touchdowns after a better second half. The Patriot defense baffled Kerry Collins, who seemed to throw the ball up for grabs every single time his number was called. The Panthers have a top tier rushing attack with two big tough backs, Steven Davis and Deshaun Foster. Last week against the Raiders the Patriots defense didn’t show me they could consistently stop the rush. The Panthers will take advantage of that this weekend, feeding the ball to Foster and Davis many a time. This is where the Patriots will finally make my predictions come true as they begin to play like an average team. Carolina is a much better team than they showed against the Saints last week. With Kris Jenkins out for the year, they’ll really have to step up to beat the Patriots. This game will be close, as the spread insists, but at the end of the game it will be the Patriots who should’ve gotten the points. The Panthers fell victim to the emotional outburst from the Saints, but they have the confidence to compete with the defending world champs, and that’s just what they’ll do.
Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Pittsburgh (-6) @ Houston – The Steelers played a poor defense last week and destroyed them. This week the Steelers play a below average defense that hasn’t learned to mesh quite yet. The veteran leadership in the Texan secondary is gone, and all though they are athletic, they are young and still have a lot to learn. And they’ll be taking notes this weekend. Because the Steelers know how to do it all. Willie Parker should follow up his starting debut with another big performance in Houston. Hines Ward will get more involved in the action this week. The Steeler defense looked pretty good against Tennessee, but who knows what that means? We could say that Pittsburgh is as good as they were last year, or we could say the Titans are as bad as they’ve been in quite some time. Either way the Steelers found a way to win big, and they’ll do it against the punch-less Texans. David Carr had his worst game as a professional, and if he wants to continue to start for his team, he’ll have to perform at a higher level. It doesn’t look like his competition is getting any easier, so he’ll have to step up big or sit down fast. The Steelers win big on the road. Roethlisberger continues to thrive.
Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

San Francisco @ Philadelphia (-13) The Eagles are big favorites even after their stubby performance in Atlanta on Monday night. Donovan McNabb looked like a spaz and TO dropped more passes than he did all last year. Brian Westbrook didn’t rush the ball worth a sheep’s ass, and Mike Vick seemed like he could just break out in a trot and gain 20 yards any time he wanted against the feared Philly D. Maybe Trotter is that important. Kudos to Kevin Mathis by the way. That was a good trade bub. (Sorry to hear he’s out for the year, hopefully he recovers fast, seriously) As for the 49ers, they already have more wins than I thought they’d have all year. Funny, the St. Louis Rams screwed me again. Well hopefully the Rams are just that pathetic, and the 49ers really are as bad as I had imagined. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners fail to score an offensive touchdown against the Eagles. Philly should get back on track against the, 1-15-to be, San Francisco 49ers. McNabb will play through the sore chest he got from sitting in the pocket and holding on to the ball like Warren. Think, about it. What happened to the mobile Donovan McNabb? He’ll be back in full form against an attacking Niner defense. Look for McNabb to have huge numbers throwing touchdowns to Owens, LJ Smith, and Brian Westbrook. They’ll show us why they’re picked to make a Super Bowl return. Game Date: 09/18/05 13:00 ET

Atlanta (+1) @ Seattle – The Atlanta Falcons looked like a pretty good football team last week against the “defending NFC Champion” Philadelphia Eagles. This week they play the “I can’t believe we got into the playoffs with nine wins last year” Seattle Seahawks who got destroyed in the second half at Jacksonville last week. Based on that, this should be one hell of a game! In week 1 Seattle played well in the first half, and it should be easier for Shawn Alexander to get good yards against a team that doesn’t have Marcus Stroud and John Henderson stuffing holes up front. Either way, why the Seahawks are favored in this one is beyond me. They definitely didn’t prove that their defense has improved, and their offense doesn’t look any better than the inconsistent attack they tried last year. That being said, the Falcons still have a little fast superstar I like to call Mike Vick. He’ll have a field day with a defense that should be very worried about Warrick Dunn and TJ Duckett. The Hawks are young on defense, and they should be in for a nice little lesson in rushing from the Falcons. The Atlanta Falcons haven’t beat the Seahawks in the last three seasons, but things will change this Sunday in Seattle, as Vick and his pack of pesky players take it to the Hawks.
Game Date: 09/18/05 16:05 ET

St. Louis @ Arizona (-1) – Arizona got beat by the Giants last week, and it was no close game. The Giants special teams outscored the entire Cardinal unit, and the Arizona rookies didn’t look as good as everyone thought they’d be. That being said, it was only week one, and nobody recovers from a debacle better than coach Dennis Green. Fortunately for the Cardinals, they play the worst team in football this week. Yes, the St. Louis Rams. Why are they the worst? They lost to the Niners last week. Must I say more? Okay, I will. Not only did they lose to the Niners, but they got whooped by the Niners. They only lost by three, but if it weren’t for the terrible Niners trying as hard as they could to lose, the Rams wouldn’t have been close. Mike Martz started off rushing Steven Jackson, but gave up on that much too early. I’ll never understand this Joker. Marc Bulger had pretty good numbers for a guy who got beat by San Francisco, but he won’t have another good day against Arizona. Dennis Green will have his boys ready to go after getting embarrassed to start the year. Kurt Warner might never find the touch that made him MVP while leading the Rams, but he can be as good as Tim Rattay. Apparently, that’s good enough to beat the Rams. Game Date: 09/18/05 16:05 ET

Cleveland (+6.5) @ Green Bay – After the way the Green Bay Packers played against the Detroit Lions last week, I can’t believe their favored by 6.5. And for most of the game last week the Packers had Javon Walker. He was the best option the Packers had, and yes, that includes Ahman Green and Brett Favre. This could be an odd year for the Packers who appear to be on a greasy slip ‘n’ slide headed off a cliff. On the bright side their defense played fairly well on opening day. But that can’t be expected on a weekly basis out of this club. Romeo Crenel’s team played pretty well against a good Bengal team, but Carson Palmer lit their secondary up for 280 yards. So they’re vulnerable. Is Brett still good enough to take advantage of the Browns? Maybe, but can he take advantage while he’s getting hit every down because his offensive line couldn’t stop the Little Giants? Probably not. Either way, it’s not right for the Packers to be favored by more than a couple even if they’re playing at Lambeau. Hell, until they prove otherwise, they should never be favored. Look for the Browns to play tit for tat with the Packers eventually upsetting Green Bay at home. My Uncle John isn’t going to like this one.
Game Date: 09/18/05 16:15 ET

Miami @ N.Y. Jets (-6) – The New York Jets really disappointed me last week, even though I think the Chiefs are one of the league’s best teams. Obviously I wasn’t the only one disappointed with the Jets. Head coach Herman Edwards went off on his team in practice, printing out a paper with size 22 font listing things like, don’t fumble, as something they need to do to win. Hopefully, for the Jets, that “back to basics” business works against the hapless Miami Dolphins. Well, I guess the Dolphins have a little hap. They took it to a Bronco team that looked as bad as I’ve ever seen. Gus Ferrote, of all people, was throwing the ball around their defense as if he was playing catch in his backyard. But I’ll talk about Denver later. I can’t imagine the Jets will ever play as bad as they did in Kansas City last weekend. Chad Pennington won’t be dropping snaps, and Laveranues Coles won’t be dropping passes. What will be happening is Curtis Martin running with the ball, fast and effective. Curtis needs to succeed for the Jets to get where they want to be. Miami can’t stop the Jets when Curtis is running the ball, and Chad Pennington is play action passing. The Jets defense is strong enough to shut out Ferrote and the rest of the Dolphins. I’m betting those New York Jets play up to their ability this week. Game Date: 09/18/05 16:15 ET

San Diego (+3) @ Denver – San Diego has LT. This week Antonio Gates is back. Denver lost to Miami 34-10. C’mon.
Game Date: 09/18/05 16:15 ET

Kansas City (-1) @ Oakland – The Chiefs just tore into the New York Jets in their opener. The Chiefs look like the old Kansas City team that started the season 9-0 a couple of years ago. Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson look like the best running back tandem in the NFL. In fact I’d rate Priest number 1 and Larry wouldn’t be too far behind. Especially, if he keeps doing what he’s doing. And I don’t mean getting arrested. Oakland got pushed around by the Patriots. Even when the score was close, the Raiders looked like everything they did was so difficult while the Patriots didn’t even get a brow sweat. The Raiders dropped the passes that did get to them, and Kerry Collins threw the rest of them up for grabs. Lamont Jordan played pretty well, rushing for 70 and receiving for 40 yards. He’s a big back who will give the Chiefs another tough test. The Kansas City defense will be up for the challenge, as they looked much improved from yesteryear. Until Kerry Collins stops throwing lob passes every chance he gets, I don’t think the Raiders can beat a good team. He hasn’t stopped doing that since he was 7, so the Raiders will struggle often. Trent Green does just enough to win games. He leads his team and doesn’t make many mistakes. Unless the unthinkable happens, the Chiefs will slaughter the Oakland Raiders in Oakland. Game Date: 09/18/05 20:30 ET

N.Y. Giants @ New Orleans (+3) – The Saints are playing a home game in New York against the Giants. The Giants slaughtered the new and improved Arizona Cardinals. The Saints stumbled to a victory over the Panthers. Every year the Saints underachieve. All things point to trouble for the Saints. But that’s what’s so great about this team. They’ve always needed something to play for and now they have it, New Orleans. I don’t want to get all sentimental, because this is football and Hurricane Katrina is life. But the Saints have a new reason to go out on the field every single week and win. That’s all they’ve ever needed. Whether it’s in San Antonio, New Orleans, or Egypt, the New Orleans Saints are going to come with it every single game. And they have the talent to win a lot of games if they play like that. Deuce McCallister will find room to run against the wobbly New York Giant defense, and Aaron Brooks will pick his places to shine. Look for Joe Horn to have a big game in the spotlight in New York. Eli Manning still hasn’t impressed me much, but Tiki Barbar can really play this game. Barbar will keep the Giants in it, but Saint confidence will keep New Orleans on top. Game Date: 09/19/05 19:30 ET

Washington @ Dallas (-6) – I’d love to say that I believe the Washington Redskins are going to win. I’d say that Mark Brunell is the new starter and he gives the Redskins something Patrick Ramsey doesn’t. I’d even talk about how Clinton Portis looks like he’s finally found out how to run in Joe Gibbs’ scheme. And that defense, hell, I wouldn’t even be fibbing when I said they were a very good group. But the bottom line is, Dallas looks like a better team than Washington. The Washington Redskins barely skipped by the Bears and rookie signal caller Kyle Orton, 9-7. Playing in Dallas on Monday night against the Cowboys. This is going to be tough, but I’m taking Dallas. Last year was great. I bet against Dallas every week, and they made me look great. Plus I don’t like the Cowboys. I don’t like that stupid star on their helmet, the fact that they claim to be America’s team, and I really hate those stupid Jerry Jones commercials when he talks about the “12 person hot-tub shaped like Texas Stadium”. But I need victories like Jerry Jones needs a new face, so I have to go with the more talented team here, and that is surely the Dallas Cowboys. Julius Jones looks really good, and Drew Bledsoe wasn’t a complete piece of crap last week. Mark Brunell hasn’t had it for some time, and Clinton Portis is in a rushing scheme that makes him slow down and wait for blocks. All signs point to a big Cowboy win in Dallas.

Free NFL Picks 05-06 Week 1

Hello and welcome. Football season is upon us. Hooray pig skin! Hooray beer! Hooray Sundays sacked on the sofa! This is Lucky Lester storming back from a .500 record a year ago, relaxed and ready for a sophomore performance that will have us rolling in the money. Last year, week one was my best single week record, and this year should be no different. If you weren’t here for the 2004-’05 season, this is how it works. week in and week out I’ll make my picks. I’ll give reasons, both personal and otherwise, that support my decision on each game. I’ll keep a log of what happened each week, and you can always check out my follow up articles to see how I did. Are you ready for some big hits? Well, get ready for that as well as some Lambeau leaps, bulldogs dressed in dresses, and home team heroics? Once again the odds-makers have stumbled out of the box, and I’m standing to make a pretty penny off of their mistakes.Oakland (+7.5) @ New England – This is Randy Moss’ big day. The Black and Silver has been calling him since he was rocking a bong in the dressing room on draft day. That was the day Al Davis put a little notch in his little black book. The only thing holding this relationship back was some run-ins with the local law enforcement, a premature evacuation from a game, and too much running of the mouth. Thanks Randy, Al’s dream has come true. Fortunately for Mr. Davis, Moss hasn’t only brought his off the field antics to the Raiders, but comes accompanied by the greatest receiving ability the NFL has. Oakland has a buzz about them; you could see it during the preseason. Kerry Collins finally has someone he can’t overthrow, which should dwindle his interception numbers. Lamont Jordan should bring a steady rushing attack to a team that didn’t produce a thousand yard back last year. And don’t count out the defense. It wasn’t too long ago that Charles Woodson was one of the best corners in the league. If he can return to form, and the 600+ pound duo of Ted Washington and Warren Sapp can perform up to their standards, this team could be scary. As for the defending champs, they should be up to their same old tricks. They’ll have to be to have a chance in a tough AFC. They’ve lost a lot of the coaching staff genius that helped them win the last two Super Bowls. They’ve also lost Teddy Bruschi. Ty Law has joined the Jets, and I don’t think they can do it again. Tom Brady’s a great quarterback and Corey Dillon was everything the Pats needed in his first year with the team, but is that enough? Their Heart and Soul, Ted, is out for the year, and I think it will bring them down. Take Oakland to get closer than a touchdown, making them winners in my mind, and more importantly the bookie’s.
Game Date: 09/08/05 21:00 ET

Denver (-5) @ Miami – There is no reason the Bronco’s shouldn’t be favored by a couple of touchdowns against a team that doesn’t own a decent college starter. Okay, Gus Ferotte was pretty good, but AJ Feely, he didn’t even play for the Oregon Ducks. As if that wasn’t enough, the perennially tough as nails defense was torn apart and put up for sale to any bidder. In fact, most high priced stars, like Patrick Surtain, were just cut. That makes for a tough year for the Nick Saban led Dolphins. If the defense can’t keep them in games, there is no way the Dolphins stumble on a handful of wins, let alone a win against a solid team from Denver. Ronnie Brown might find room against an average run defense, but I can’t see enough from the passing game to keep the Fins within a touchdown. The only question from this game, who will be the “real”, featured back in Denver? Who will add his name to the 1000-yard back club? Tatum Bell? Or will it be an old name, Mike Anderson? This is as easy as it gets. Pick the Broncos in what has the makings of an old fashion blow out, Firestone-style. Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Cincinnati (-3.5) @ Cleveland – The Browns aren’t worth a bet until Trent Dilfer proves he can still win football games as the head signal caller. The Browns aren’t without weapons though. Braylon Edwards has shown glimpses of his future stardom, and Reuben Droughns has proven he can pile up the yardage. Defense is where the Browns will struggle. They lost their best corner to the Ravens, and they have a completely new coaching staff. Dilfer has never proven he’s a winner without a dominant defense behind him. Things won’t change against the steadily improving Bengals. I’m sure everyone’s heard it a thousand times this preseason, but I’m pretty confident this will be the year Carson Palmer makes his bid for a Pro Bowl. He has one of the best young receivers in the game as his go to guy, Chad Johnson. Rudi Johnson is as steady as they come, and Marvin Lewis has worked wonders with an average defense to get them into the overall top ten a year ago. This year will be even better for young Bengals. Cinci is a play or two away from the playoffs. Cleveland is a win or two away from the number one pick in next years draft. This one, like the Bronco game, is a no-brainer. Take the Bengals on the road in a quick stomping of Romeo’s first game as a head coach.
Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Houston @ Buffalo (-5.5) – The Buffalo Bills are a popular pick to win their way into the playoffs this year. If you haven’t heard, this is why. Drew Bledsoe was released, and JP Losman will take over as the leader of a team that desperately needed to drop the fat 7th grader who’d been taking poorly timed sacks and throwing 4th quarter interceptions for the last year and a half. Losman may be young and immature compared to Drew, but he could cartwheel down the field faster than Bledsoe could sprint. That’s not saying JP has the form of a gymnast either. What You Talking ‘Bout Willis McGahee will finally be fully recovered from his knee injury that kept him out of football his rookie season. Last year was just a glimpse of what was to come from the former Hurricane, this year should make us awe. Buffalo has the best defense in football. After a preseason scrimmage, Brett Favre said he hopes they don’t play them during the season. Houston was hoping the same thing. SOL. Houston should be a good team this year. David Carr has looked poor throughout the preseason, making people question if he’ll ever have the breakout year everyone has expected. Dominick Davis is one of the best young backs in the league, when he’s healthy. But he’s been a slow starter since he broke into the league. Look for Houston to stumble out of the box, allowing the Buffalo defense to make big plays early. The Texans will fall down early, never to resurface with the lead.
Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Tennessee @ Pittsburgh (-7) – The Steelers might be a bit overrated a year after their 15-1 regular season record. But, they’re still a good team. 15-1? No. Opening dominance against the Titans. Indeed. Roethlisburger will get plenty of chances to find wide open receivers against a team that lost both of their starting receivers to “rebuilding-disease”. Steve McNair is back and supposedly better than ever, though he’s lost his favorite receiver and a chunk of why the Titans were so good the last few years. Derrick Mason has a new home in Baltimore, and McNair’s never had a good on-field relationship with talented wideout Drew Bennett. I fully expect the Steeler offensive attack to struggle without Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley, but Willie Parker will find holes in a suspect defensive line, and Hines Ward will show why he deserves the new contract he held-out for. Big Ben will calm down at the end of the first half and the Steelers will pull away from the Titans. A close first half will end closer to a blowout than anything else. Steelers win big; the Titans get one game closer to the end of the season.
Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Chicago @ Washington (-5.5) – In a real crowd-pleasing move, the NFL brass has already put together the game of the year. The Super Bowl hopeful Bears and the strong and consistent Redskins meet in what could be a real post season match-up. Yah right! This is anything but a top-notch contest, but at least Tag’s snuck these two teams into the same game. Good work. The Bears’ season drooled down the drain when Rex Grossman had an early exit, again. First year pro, Kyle Orton, will have the reigns in what promises to be everything but promising. Mushin Muhammad is still a touchdown threat anywhere in the red-zone, and the tandem of Thomas Jones and rookie rusher Cedric Benson should be formidable. Getting to the red-zone, or even the next first down marker, is going to be the challenge. The Bears have a solid defense, but not when they’ve been on the field for 75% of the game, and they will be. They better be in good shape. Washington has a tough defense that lost a little punch with the departure of Fred Smoot. Shawn Springs’ ability to stay healthy, and LaVar Arrington’s come back from a flurry of injuries will make the difference between a top flight and average defense for the Skins. Patrick Ramsey, who’s looked “ehhhh” this preseason, and for his entire career for that matter, will make another attempt at leading the Redskins to the playoffs. Clinton Portis should be much improved from his worst year ever. The trade of Larverneus Coles for Santana Moss won’t pay dividends, but that won’t keep Joe Gibbs from trouncing the overmatched Bears and starting the season with a much-needed win. Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

New Orleans @ Carolina (-7) – The Saints still have the talented group of youngsters they’ve always had. Well I guess they’re middle-agers now. Either way, everyone and their brother knows Jim Haslet has himself a set of playmakers on both sides of the ball. Will the signing of Dwight Smith, an ex-Buc, give the Saints what the need to get to the next level? Maybe. Will it help them beat Carolina in Carolina? Not today Junior. The Panthers are as good as they’ve been, even with Pro Bowler Mushin Muhammad in a Bears uniform. Steve Smith is back, and opposed to what he says, he’s as good and fast as ever. Steven Davis is back in the backfield with Deshaun Foster, and they still have that D. Carolina will be swinging for the fences this year. Julius Peppers might be the biggest talent in all of football, and Kris Jenkins, Mike Rucker, ex-Seahawk Ken Lucas, and the rest of the Panther D will keep opposing teams on lockdown all year long. Aaron Brooks and all his inconsitency won’t be an exception. Look for Brooks to get hit often on Sunday. The Saints defense looked dismal against the run all preseason, and now they have to play the pound it in your face Panthers on opening day. Talented Saints running back Deuce McAllister will find some yardage early, but it won’t be enough to keep the Panthers from taking the game by two touchdowns. Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Tampa Bay @ Minnesota (-6) – The Vikings are better since the departure of Randy Moss. As are the Raiders, but that’s another story. The Vikings can only worry about the Vikings, and aside from a Whizzenator, the headlines about the mishaps and screw-ups of Viking star players has been nil since Moss’s departure. One point for Minnesota. Daunte Culpepper is still the talented one-man attack he’s always been, and always was, even when Moss was out with injuries for 6 games last year. All Daunte needed was a defense to hold their end of the bargain. With the departure of Randy Moss, the Vikings had enough room on payroll to get the players they needed to level off that side of the ball. As for the offense, Daunte still has big play options with Nate Burleson, Michael Bennett, and rookie blazer Troy Williamson. I mean “speed” blazer, not “Randy Moss during the off season” blazer. Plus, the Vikings always start out 5-0. Tampa Bay finally has the fixings for a rushing attack with rookie star Carnell Williams manning the backfield. Brian Griese has shown that he can be a decent starting quarterback, but can he lead the Buc’s to a winning season and a playoff picture? Only time will tell. Tampa’s defense has always been stout, and this year will be no different. Some key loses have brought them down from their pedestal, but top 10 won’t be a stretch. My opening day diagnosis is this; the Vikings will use their offensive fire power to pull ahead early. Some big plays from Carnell Williams will have the Buc’s fighting back early in the second half, but Culpepper will keep the Tampa Bay comeback-excitement to rest with a vintage-Culpepper bomb to rookie wideout Troy Williamson. The new and improved Viking D will step-up and make a big play down the stretch, keeping the Vikings up 10 as time expires. Take the Vikes in an exciting game in Minnesota. Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Seattle @ Jacksonville (-3) – Seattle made some good moves in the off-season, keeping their big three; Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasslebeck, and Walter Jones. Koren Robinson and the fiasco that was his career in Seattle is now over, and the Seahawk brass can go to sleep at night knowing their star receiver won’t be in jail with a DUI in the morning. Unfortunately for the Seahawks there is a downside to the absence of Koren Robinson. Somebody else has to start opposite Jackson. That someone will be Bobby Engram and a plethora of different names and faces. If someone or a couple of them step up, watch out for the Seahawk offensive attack. As for now, I have to bet the Seattle offense continues to struggle, and the Jacksonville defense, which is very underrated, will take advantage of Seattle shortcomings. Byron Leftwich is going into his third year. He should be better than ever. Fred Taylor looked healthy in his single preseason performance, which means good things for the Jags and their fans. Reggie Williams has looked like the guy the Jags drafted, instead of the imposter that showed up last year. This is great for Leftwich, who should have Jimmy Smith, Williams, Matt Jones, and Taylor to get the pig to. The Jag’s defensive line got some much needed help when they signed Reggie Hayward in the off season. The Jaguars are on their way to the playoffs. They’ll start with a tough game at home against a good Seahawk team, but they should come out on top. Three points is nothing at home, and the Jags look to be the better team. Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

New York Jets (+3) @ Kansas City – The Jets and the Chiefs. What a game. This is my pick for game of the week. Philly-Atlanta should be grand, and Colts-Ravens will be fun, but no game excites me more than Priest Holmes running his legs at one of the most improved teams in the league. This Jets defense just got better and better last year, and this year will be no different. Ty Law is now a Jet, and his leadership and shutdown ability on the corner will give the Jets a huge lift. Trent Green lost his number one receiver, Jonnie Morton. But Eddie Kennison will flash his ability as the first receiver option in Kansas City. But really, everyone knows Tony Gonzalez is Trents real number one, and he’s wearing red and white. Holmes has one of the most exciting backups in football, Larry Johnson. He’ll get his chances to make things happen. Will all the new defensive additions be enough to get the Chiefs to the Super Bowl? Kendrell Bell, Patrick Surtain, Sammy Knight, and rookie linebacker Derrick Johnson have a big task ahead of them, because God knows the Kansas City defense was as bad as any team in the NFL. Both teams will flash their fury, awing the masses, and reminding us why we all love football. In the end one of these great teams has to lose. The Jets are too steady on both sides of the ball, and the Chiefs, who’ve yet to gel into the cohesive defensive unit that they’ll become will fall just short on opening day. Chad Pennington will be happy to have his old pal, Coles, back on the field. Curtis Martin, future hall-of-famer Curtis Martin, will have one of his classic opening days. Coach Edwards will be all smiles after a powerful performance against the playoff bound Chiefs. His Jets will escape Kansas City with a road victory.
Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

Arizona (+2.5) @ New York Giants – The Cardinals are getting plenty of hype this off-season. I don’t know if it’s Dennis Green, a great draft, or the abundance of talent the Cardinals have all over the field, but I like Arizona to do big things all year on their way to the playoffs. Weird. I never thought I’d be saying that. I don’t think Kurt Warner will look like the MVP he was in St. Louis, but I do think he’ll look rejuvenated with the talent he has around him. JJ Arrington has had a tough preseason, but he’ll come around, and in the meantime, the Cards still have Marcel Shipp and others to contribute. The Giants might be starting Tim Hasselbeck. If that happens to be a truth by the time you read this, stop reading now and make a bet on the Cardinals… If Eli Manning is still the starter, well, do the same thing. Manning isn’t ready to lead these Giants to the playoffs, or an opening day win against the much-improved Cardinals. Tiki Barbar is one of the most underrated backs in the league, but who knows if and or when his “fumblitis” will return. Week 1? Plaxico Burress was a number 2 receiver in Pittsburgh. He’s being asked to be Eli’s go-to-guy. Will he fold under the pressure? Or will he step up to his potential? The Giants defense gets Michael Strahan back, but he won’t be enough to keep the Giants on top in New York. Arizona has too many weapons in their arsenal, and Kurt Warner is too excited to snap the towel on the team that sat him down last year when the playoffs weren’t so far away. Eli’s first year as a full time starter will begin with a loss at home, and an entire week of “How does it feel to get beat by Kurt?” questions. Good luck Eli!
Game Date: 09/11/05 13:00 ET

St. Louis (-6) @ San Francisco – This is the easiest game of the week. I plan to make all my money right here. The Rams will slaughter the 49ers. Do I think the Rams are that good? Not at all, in fact, I think they’ll be lucky to be 9-7 this year. But I’ll tell you one thing I’m sure of; two of those wins will come from games against San Francisco. Tim Rattay will be starting for the 49ers, which has never seemed to workout for the club. Things won’t change. Steven Jackson is too good for the Niner defense to stop, hell, so is Marshal Faulk, or maybe even Marsha Brady? This game will be good for a few good highlights though, so it might be worth a check-in from time to time. “Bulger deep to Holt,” “Bulger long to Bruce,” “Bulger with a deep interception,” “Steven Jackson 60 yards down the right side.” Something along those lines. Notice, there is no 49er scoring involved in those highlights. Don’t be amazed if that actually happens. Rams huge, think 35-3. Game Date: 09/11/05 14:15 ET

Green Bay @ Detroit (-3) – I never thought I’d see the day Detroit was favored against Green Bay. Now I can’t believe the Lions are only favored by 3 in Detroit. Everyone knows the Lions play good ball at home, and everyone also knows that you can’t have a good team with a terrible defense and a shoddy offensive line. The Pack has both. The Pack also has Brett Favre. This is both good and bad. He’s going to throw touchdowns… and interceptions. This year could be the year Brett ends up on the south end of .500. What a way to go out. Ahman Green has looked miserable rushing behind the makeshift line in ‘Sconsin. Brett has had both good and bad games in the preseason, but who cares right, that was preseason. Detroit has been happy with Joey Harrington’s performance this preseason, and they better be, because Jeff Garcia is out for the year with a broken chicken leg. So much for a quarterback controversy. Harrington will actually have to try to do poorly to keep the Lions out of games. All over the field Detroit has playmakers. Jumpballs might be one of the Lion’s biggest weapons. Mike Williams, Roy Williams, Charlie Rogers, Kevin Jones… my God, just throw the damn ball down field, see what happens. Those 4 guys would kill in a 4×100 relay. They’ll win this game, too. Take the Lions in a high scoring event.
Game Date: 09/11/05 14:15 ET

Dallas @ San Diego (-4.5) – San Diego is without their biggest receiving threat, tight end Antonio Gates. He’s suspended for the first game because of his little holdout. That was a good move. Idiots. Anyway, even without Gates, the Chargers still have the upper hand. Ladainian Tomlinson is the best the NFL has to offer, and Drew Brees hasn’t seemed to have lost the magic he pulled out of his helmet a year ago. Keenan McCardell has had an entire off season to learn the Charger offense, which should add to his effectiveness. Reche Caldwell is back after an injury cost him most of his third year. He was in the process of breaking out before he went out broken. Look for him to be a bigger part of the offensive attack in San Diego this year. Even with the good draft, and big off-season, I don’t think the Dallas Cowboys will come out victorious in this one. Drew Bledsoe has gotten mixed reviews during the preseason. Figure that, Drew Bledsoe, inconsistent. Wow! Dallas went out and bought offensive line help, which should add to Drew effectiveness. Unfortunately, they didn’t go out and get Drew some legs or a brain. Drew will still hold the ball too long and get sacked because he’s about as mobile as an upside down turtle. And he’ll definitely still throw into double coverage… interception! I can’t wait to see the blank stare on Parcells face the first time Drew sends a beautiful spiral to Quentin Jammer (Charger cornerback). The Chargers defense was young last year. Another year under their belt has only made them better. Look for Drew Brees and company to light up the overrated Dallas defense, eliciting laughter from me, and a look of horror on Bill’s face as his Cowboys fall short in the season opener. Game Date: 09/11/05 14:15 ET

Indianapolis @ Baltimore (+3) – This is one of the better games of the day. Will the Colts number one ranked secondary be able to stop the talented signal caller, Kyle Boller? What can I say? That lines a load of BS. The Colts secondary, right near the bottom of the league, is depleted, and injury ridden. Kyle Boller is… bad. But he has too many weapons and coaching specialists to fail. And if anyone can keep Peyton Manning and the Colts from scoring a ton of points, it has to be Ray Lewis and his group of trusty steeds. Right? If Jamal Lewis can step in and play like he can, the Ravens will upset the Super Bowl favored Colts in Baltimore. Even Kyle Boller should be able to light up the Colts secondary. Baltimore might have the best defensive players one team has ever had. Samarri Rolle is great, in fact, every single one of their defensive backs is fantastic. Their fourth guy is Neon Deion. How much better can it get? Look for the Ravens to take the Colts in this opener. It isn’t the popular pick, but it’s the right one. Manning will be limited to a couple touchdown passes, and one too many interceptions. Boller will look good, which might be the last time all year, leading his team to an opening day victory. Or should I say riding their defense to victory? Either way, Ravens win. Game Date: 09/11/05 20:30 ET

Philadelphia (-1) @ Atlanta – This is a great Monday night opener. Philly has been picked by just about everyone to repeat as NFC Champions, and I’m not one to argue. Their defense is back in full force. Donovan McNabb and TO looked to be on the same page in their lone preseason game. Brian Westbrook is very underrated. He’s a great speedy back who can catch passes and do just about everything you can ask from a guy. Donovan McNabb hasn’t gotten nearly enough credit for what he’s become in such a short time. He’s Philly’s MVP, bar none. Philly’s defense took a big hit when Corey Simon was released last week, but they don’t seem to be worried about it, so you shouldn’t either. Mike Vick has played very little snaps in the preseason, but he looked good. He has improved as a pocket passer, which unfortunately, the Falcons want him to be. The Eagles defense is too good to let Vick pick them apart from the pocket. Look for more interceptions than touchdowns from Vick. Michael Jenkins and Roddy White as starting receivers? I don’t know if I’m as excited as Mike sounds in interviews. Warrick Dunn and TJ Duckett will help keep the Falcons on the top of team rushing, and both should find a little room against an average run stuffing D. But that won’t be enough. This should be a good game featuring two playoff bound ball clubs, but the Eagles will show their NFC superiority late, getting the win by a touchdown or two. Take the Eagles, because that’s what I’d do. Game Date: 09/12/05 21:00 ET
